Have you ever been lonely?
The apostle Paul is one of my favorite people in the Bible. Once I see Jesus and Joseph and Elijah in heaven, I really want to hang out with Paul. The revelation he brought forth in his letters has been my lifeline. His life has been such an inspiration to me. I can’t read II Timothy without getting emotional. They are his last words to his son in the faith before he is going to be martyred. And there are some powerful revelations in that book. This verse always gets to me:
It’s an open book test!
Who remembers taking tests in school? First you have instruction and homework about your subject. The teacher teaches you what you need to know. You review it. You practice it. You ask your questions. You study it. Then you come in on “test day” to see how well you know the material. The classroom is quiet. No more talking. No more questions. No more notes open your desk. You simply take the test and turn it in. There’s a meme going around pinterest that bugs me. And it says, “Sometimes if you wonder why you can’t hear God’s voice during your trials, remember the teacher is always silent during the test.” I mean, it sounds okay. Like they’re trying to say God thinks you know the material well enough to take a test, right? I wasn’t really sure why it even bothered me. It just did. But the one hundredth time it popped up in my pinterest feed, I realized there were really two main reasons…..
What am I forgetting?
Have you ever forgotten something? I mean something really important? Like, you know, your kids? My oldest son ran track last year for the first time, and his practice got done right around the time my youngest got off the bus. So in all the chaos and distraction of Alli getting off the bus, I forgot Alex. A lot. To the point that I think his coach put my number on speed dial so it didn’t take as much time to dial me and tell me to come get him so the coach could go home. And that’s not the only time I forgot to pick them up. In fact, it got to the point that I had to enter alarms into my phone to remind me when to leave when school or track or football was over. (Bad mom award, I know.)
Lord, I can pencil you in next Thursday…

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”
But lately, my schedule seems to have hijacked my response, and instead of saying, “Lord, I am coming,” my response has turned into, “Lord, let me pencil you in next Thursday for 15 minutes!” Sad, but true. Between work, getting groceries, keeping up with the laundry, running kids to drama and track and youth and homework and dinner and, well, you get the picture……life has gotten kind of out of hand. And I was getting frustrated. I even tried getting up earlier a couple times, but it was like my daughter instinctively knew I wanted to be alone and just woke up too.
