Fear Thrives in Darkness

Have you ever been afraid of the dark? Maybe when you were a little kid, you’d lie in bed and imagine all the creepy things that were in your room. The monster in the corner or creatures that loomed overhead. What was that noise under the bed? Fear gripped your heart and you’d scream.

Maybe your mom or dad would come and turn on the light to show you it was your imagination. Nothing magically appeared when the lights went off that wasn’t there when the lights were on.

There was absolutely nothing to be afraid of. But as soon as those lights went off again, that very real fear came back to taunt you.

Worry woke me up yesterday and I heard this in my heart, “Fear thrives in darkness.”

That doesn’t mean just physical darkness. It wasn’t because it was pitch black in my bedroom.

He was referring to my soul.

The sun can be shining brightly all around us and it can still be dark in our soul. We can still be consumed with worry. About our bodies. About our marriages. About our finances or kids or jobs.

And worry’s best friend is fear. They hold hands and skip through the tulips of our minds, wreaking havoc on our hearts and tormenting our souls.

Fear thrives in the darkness, so turn on the light.

How?

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

The entrance of Your words gives light. (Psalm 119:130)

And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it. (John 1:5)

Turn on the light!

When we turn on light, all darkness runs away to hide. Darkness cannot overpower light!

We deal with fear and worry the same way Jesus dealt with temptation in the wilderness. We say, “It is written.”

When fear says, “What are you going to do?” We respond, “Do? Why I’m going to trust God! His Word says, ‘By His stripes I was healed.’ And if I was, then I am.”

And when fear says, “What if it doesn’t work?” You say what Luke 1:37 says, “It is written, ‘For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment.'”

We have the ability to turn on the light whenever we want by opening the Word of God. And when we keep that light shining by focusing on His Word, fear and worry will wave the white flag of surrender every single time.
