Enough

I stumbled across what I wrote in my journal on December 22, 2010:

Today is awesome – because today I have enough. And tomorrow will be awesome because tomorrow will be just like today! I’m thankful for the Word – it’s an anchor to my soul!

The year 2010 was rough for me. We had left the church we were working at and picked up odds and ends jobs while we figured out what we wanted to do. My husband worked for Safelite and I worked 3 part-time jobs, none of which I loved.

Money was super tight (hence the 3 jobs), and Christmas was going to be small. We were able to get all 3 of our kids something they really wanted and a few other things to go with it, but it was small in comparison to what we’d done in the past.

It broke my heart just a bit, but the kids were thrilled with what they got and didn’t seemed phased by it at all. It was a good Christmas.

I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. (Philippians 4:12)

And this year, I almost got sucked into the MORE of it all. I should buy one more gift. We have to have more cookies. We need more cinnamon rolls. I NEED a pair of short black boots to go with this one outfit.

There’s not enough!!!!!!!

It’s an easy thing to do, really. To get overwhelmed by the not enough’s and let our souls get consumed with more, more, MORE.

If I don’t bake another cookie, if we don’t wake up to fresh cinnamon rolls Christmas morning, if I don’t buy that one more thing, if I wear different shoes, it’ll still be okay because of Him.

Jesus was still born. He still lived. He still died. He destroyed the works of the enemy and released us from our chains to live a new life of freedom and intimacy with the Father.

God is with us and in us in all of His presence and love and power and goodness and peace. Do you remember what it was like before you had that? I do. Not good.

Even if we don’t do one more thing for Christmas, life is good because His goodness and mercy are following us all the days of our lives.

Let’s not be overwhelmed today. Let’s take a deep breath, take a moment to meditate on the One we’re celebrating, drink in His goodness and give away His love, and be at peace.

Today is awesome. We have enough because we have Jesus, and He really is all we will ever need.
