Who You Should Vote For – Part 1

I know the elections and politics are hot topics. There are so many opinions swirling around about what a Christian’s stance should be that it’s dizzying. I don’t usually jump into the fray on social media or my blog, but there’s this one nagging little point that I can’t get away from, so here we go.

Christians are saying they aren’t going to vote, and that’s bugging me. So we’re going to address some reasons why that might be (so I can hopefully change your mind) and then I’m going to tell you who to vote for.

Yes, you read that right. Ever so humbly, I’m going to tell you who to vote for. Please read to the end of both posts of this blog before you make a decision.

Okay. So the candidates we have to choose from are not Billy Graham or Mother Teresa. Not even close. And it can be very perplexing….downright difficult….the idea of determining who to vote for. There are things about both candidates that a Christian just can’t get behind. I get it.

But to NOT vote at all? To live in the land of the free because of the brave and forfeit the right – the responsibility even – that our founding fathers and thousands of others have fought for, have bled and died for? To essentially let someone else make the decision for you? I don’t understand that.

Maybe it’s because I’m a control freak and like to make my own decisions, but I don’t get the whole I’m not going to vote thing.

A few reasons come to mind that may drive a Christian to not want to vote. Maybe you can identify with one of them?

We Haven’t Been Praying for the Elections

Or we don’t believe our prayers are working because of what we see. If we’ve been praying all along for God’s plan and will to be done, faith in the One to whom we’re praying should be getting stronger. Even if we don’t understand what we’re seeing, we still know that there’s a bigger picture and we need to trust God’s plans over what we think.

God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We’ve got to trust that if we’ve prayed, He’s moving and He’ll work it all out for good. We do believe the Bible, don’t we? If you’ve been praying, you can relax. Prayer works. If you haven’t, it might be a good time to start.

We’re waiting for Billy Graham to Run for President

Well, we need to stop. Billy Graham isn’t going to run for president, and even if he did, would it really change anything? Are we waiting for someone we agree with on 100% of the issues or a candidate we think can fix America to run before we’ll vote?

If so, that’s misplaced trust. The truth is our hope for America does not rest on any person. There isn’t a person alive who can fix it. Our hope lies only in God.

And He can use people we don’t agree with. God can use people who aren’t Christians for His purposes. I’ll say that again. God has and can and will continue to use even ungodly people to fulfill His purposes.

He used Cyrus, a heathen king, to put the plan to rebuild His temple into motion and to fund it. God even called King Cyrus “My anointed.”

“Praise the name of God forever and ever,
for he has all wisdom and power.
He controls the course of world events;
he removes kings and sets up other kings.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the scholars.” (Daniel 2:20-21)

We do believe Daniel, right? We need to remember that ultimately God has a plan, and His plan will stand no matter who’s in office….even if it’s someone we don’t agree with. We have a choice between two people here, and we need to make it. We need to vote.

So who should we vote for? We’re not quite finished discussing this yet. Come back for part two and I’ll tell you.
