Are you practicing the hush?

Voices. We all have one, and it’s distinctive. We use it to express our thoughts. To sing. To communicate. Before we could even form words or thoughts or sentences, we used our voices. There’s nothing as sweet as a baby’s coo and nothing quite as heart-wrenching as it’s cry.

I love how the VOICE translation expresses John 1:1-2.

Before time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking. The Voice was and is God. This celestial Word remained ever present with the Creator; His speech shaped the entire cosmos.

Before time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking.

God has a voice, and He uses it. It shows He’s alive and active. The dead don’t speak, do they?

His voice encourages us, “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.”

His voice corrects and comforts and strengthens and refreshes. Oh, how it refreshes my soul!

It whispers across my heart, “I love you more than you’ll ever know.”

Even in the 400-year silence between Malachi and the gospels, He was speaking. They had the Law and the Psalms and Prophets.

He’s never silent as long as we have the Word – His voice captured for all time.

His voice is always there, wooing and guiding and calling to us. But sometimes we don’t hear it for the distractions all around. Our world is so noisy – TV and radio and iPods and podcasts and social media and movies and talk shows and 24-hour news stations.

The cacophony of sound all around can be deafening at times to His voice. And we wonder why He isn’t speaking when really He is. All the time. We just can’t hear Him.

Silence can be uncomfortable, especially if we’ve grown accustomed to the hullabaloo of the racket that surrounds us, but we need to practice it to get good at it. To get good at the silence.

It takes effort, you know, to practice the hush, the noiselessness, the complete absence of sound, but if we do, I think our ability to hear the voice of the lover of our souls will abound.

So I think I will. Today. Find a noiseless place. Practice the hush. Listen in the silence and hear what He’s saying to me.

How about you?
