This is what trust looks like

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It’s also the busiest, craziest time of the year. And I typically start thinking about it in October. At the latest.

It is generally about that time I start asking the kids, “What do you want for Christmas? Make a list please!”

This year, Alex and Alli got right on it. Lots of great ideas. Mookie…not so much. I’d keep asking and asking, and he’d mention a couple things here or there, but no list.

Until….yesterday. December 22nd. The Monday before Christmas. He came into the kitchen and said, “I’m going to go make my list now.”

And he was so sincere and excited I waited until he left the room before I started hyperventilating and panicking. I didn’t say it, but I thought, “Ummmm….it’s a little late, don’t ya think?”

But there were only two things on the list, one of which we had thankfully already purchased. And I had never been so thankful for Amazon in my life. Click, click, click, and the only other thing on his list will be here tomorrow. Whew.

But after the feeling of panic subsided and I caught my breath, I just smiled.

This is what trust looks like.

The pure innocence and excitement and trust on his face when he told me that was priceless. There was no doubt in his mind that his dad and I were fully able to get whatever was on his list in two days.

Pure trust.

And that’s just how we’re supposed to be when we come to God with our impossible situations. Jesus said we are to have the faith of a child. And that’s what I thought about when Mookie went off to make his list on December 22nd.

There are a lot of things my kids ask for that are out of the realm of possible for me. Things I just can’t do. Thankfully, Mookie’s list was in the budget and easily accessible.

But God doesn’t have any limitations. There is no realm of impossible when it comes to His power. The impossible is possible with God.

The same God who created all we see and parted the red sea and dropped the walls of Jericho and provided bread and quail every day for millions of people and brought water from a rock and multiplied the widow’s oil and flour and protected the Hebrew children in the fire and closed the mouths of the lions and put money in a fish’s mouth and healed the sick and raised the dead is living inside you and me, just waiting for us to ask.

Lord, help us to trust you with the innocence of a child. You are able. And You are faithful who promised. Amen!
