“If you say so!” Have you ever said that to anyone? What it really means is, “Ummm, I”m thinking this isn’t going to work, but I’m game to try it anyway just to show you how crazy you are, and then we can do it my way.” When Jesus told Simon Peter to let down his nets in the same place he had caught NOTHING all night, he thought Jesus was crazy….But he said, “If you say so”….and he saw a miracle!
One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. (Luke 5:1-7)
“If you say so!” Have you ever said that to anyone? What it really means is, “Ummm, I”m thinking this isn’t going to work, but I’m game to try it anyway just to show you how crazy you are, and then we can do it my way.”
Jesus was preaching to the crowds one day and He needed a boat to preach from. (He could see the whole crowd, and they could see and hear Him…water causes sound to carry better.) Once he finished using it, he turned to the owner, Simon Peter, and said “Go deep and let down your nets again.” Simple enough. But Simon hesitated. He didn’t exactly respond in faith…
“But Master, we worked out there all night and didn’t catch a thing. We are exhausted. We can tell you from experience there’s NOTHING out there. This is crazy, but if you say so, we’ll do it again, just to prove to you there isn’t anything there.”
I bet they even went out to the exact spot they worked all night because they knew nothing was there just to prove that Jesus was wrong. But Simon was the one that was wrong. They caught more fish than they could hold. They had to call their partners out to help haul it in, and even with two boats, there were so many fish the boats were sinking. They went from nothing to overflowing in a heartbeat!
We have all been in Simon’s position, haven’t we? Maybe you were believing God for healing and ended up at the doctors. Maybe you were trying to get out of debt and no matter how hard you tried, you just kept digging deeper in. And you decided to just wash your nets and call it a day and just give up trying.
We serve a Too Much God! Don’t let those experiences keep you out of God’s promise to you. Don’t back off because you didn’t catch anything this time. Cast those nets out again. Dare to trust Him again! He’s got a boat-sinking, net-breaking, miracle catch for you.
I’m ready to take Him at His Word, just because He said so, and not let go until I see my miracle. Who’s with me?
So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. (Hebrews 10:35-36)
